How to get a marriage license in NYC?

Spoiler: It’s the hardest and most boring part about planning an elopement/wedding but it must be done - and we’re here to help!

Getting a marriage license in New York City is a necessary step to make your marriage official. Whether you’re a local or planning from overseas, obtaining a marriage license is straightforward, and we’re here to guide you through the process.

  • Check out the costs and information at NYC’s favourite Micro Wedding Specialists, I Do Drive Thru. Once you book in, you will be connected with an amazing Officiant, who will be able to answer all of your questions. Book HERE.

  • Check the Requirements: Before you apply for a marriage license, ensure you meet the requirements. Both parties must be at least 18 years old. You'll also need valid identification – typically a driver’s license or passport.

  • Apply Online for an appointment: NYC makes it convenient for couples by allowing them to start the application process online. Fill out the marriage license application on the official City Clerk’ss website. Be accurate with your personal details to avoid delays. You can select an appointment for either an in-person appointment or a virtual appointment for convenience. Whichever option you choose, both partners will physically need to be present in New York to meet with the city clerk. For virtual appointments, they use an IP tracking system to ensure you are in New York (so no funny business!) The application fee is $35 paid by credit card or money order directly to the city clerk.

  • Complete the Waiting Period: After your appointment with the city clerk and your application is processed, there's a 24-hour waiting period before your marriage license is considered valid. If you're planning a last-minute wedding, be sure to factorin this waiting period. If you have a virtual appointment, the license will be uploaded into your online profile. If it’s an in person appointment the city clerk will give it to you in person. The license is valid for 60 days from the date it’s issued, giving you ample time to plan your wedding ceremony.

  • After the ceremony: Your officiant will sign and file the license with the city clerk within 5 days (usually 1-2 days) after the ceremony. For record they will send you an electronic copy for your records. Within 2-4 weeks the city clerk will mail you your official license in the mail - even to an international address.
